In times of crisis unexpected creativity and innovation are often awakened. This is also the case with the two companies Spühl GmbH from Wittenbach and swiss-sonic Ultraschall AG from Arbon. Since beginning of May 2020, urgently needed protective face masks have been produced in the Eastern part of Switzerland to provide much needed protection.
The know-how, the technical requirements and a long standing collaboration were already in place. Using these elements for the production of face masks was a logical step for Spühl and swiss-sonic in view of the acute emergency situation in Switzerland.
From initial tests and hand-made product samples, a professional production line for protective face masks was created in a short time at the Wittenbach site. swiss-sonic supplied the ultrasonic technology for welding fleece, Spühl the machine elements and assembly capacities.
The raw material comes from the EU and is processed into finished face masks in Spühl's production facilities. 3-ply fleece with a material thickness of 100 g/m2 in the middle layer is used to ensure reliable protection.
Battling the scarcity
In a first step, the production volume is around 20,000 protective face masks per day. The production line is working at full speed to meet the strong demand. An expansion of capacities is already being planned and cooperation with external partners is being considered.
Spühl sells to major customers such as cantonal organisations, municipalities, nursing staff and other institutions, especially in Eastern Switzerland (www.spuhl.com/hygienemasken). Smaller quantities are made available by swiss-sonic for private individuals and businesses, and can be ordered via the online shop (www.sonic-protect.ch) via postal service or direct pick up in Arbon.
Jürg Bernet, owner of swiss-sonic, and Thomas Boltshauser, CEO of Spühl, are convinced that with these efforts they are making a meaningful contribution to supplying Swiss institutions with face masks and in preserving jobs and strengthening the economy of Eastern Switzerland.
